Paintings and drawings of the Viennese painter Peter Dotrel (1942-2013) can be found in the Graphics Collection of the Albertina Vienna and the Austrian national picture-lending library. He was one of the last pupils of the famous Austrian painter Herbert Boeckl and graduate of Franz Elsner’s master class. His oeuvre is spanned over five decades and is characterized by the development of a unique style. Nonetheless Peter Dotrel has to be discovered anew, because he has refused the art scene and led a secluded life. As constricted and impoverished his life was so much the more his art was full of nuances. Dotrel’s mysterious paintings are profound and allow an insight into the artist’s soul. They lead into the emotional and intellectual world of the sensitive painter and tell of the profundity of human existence.
