The case type of the cartel clock was developed in France in the 18th century. These wall clocks originated out of a combination of the pendule and its console and can be found in the most different shapes and with various decors. In the Danube Monarchy they enjoyed great popularity under Emperor Joseph II. The cases of Viennese cartel clocks however weren’t cast out of bronze like the French versions but carved out of lime wood, mounted and/or gilt.
