Pictures, as well as descriptions – photos, film, fiction, travel guides – prepare the way for our encounter with cities. Nowhere else is the media-created perception channel as intense and inescapable as in New York. It is amazing that Martina Pippal, who lives and works in Vienna and New York, manages to stay free from all of this, in order to discover new perspectives. She combines intense observational skills with social-political sensitivity; she is interested in the effects of gentrification or the expectations the individual has from public spaces. Beyond the analytical dimension, her work speaks to us through its painterly quality. In this respect, Martina Pippal is, in a positive sense, an exception amongst artists. For Martina Pippal “Brooklyn Bridge” has become a stage, on which four protagonists with very different backgrounds, conscious of being observed, negotiate rules for a possible coexistence.
