“Why me” – the question posed in the title of the work serves as an indirect reference to the artist’s personal experiences, the challenges of his life, and his search for answers. Through the posture of the figure – with outstretched arms and head tilted upward – the human form expresses a sense of waiting, open to inspiration, to insight.

The sculpture radiates confidence and acceptance of the responsibility of existence. The simple shaping of the human figure – a characteristic feature of Souvatzoglou’s sculptures – also incorporates a stylized rendering of anatomical elements. The upper limbs are elongated, ending in oversized hands, while the slender body stands firmly rooted to the ground, supported by equally powerful, emphasized feet.

The open arms do not suggest resignation but rather embody the self-sufficiency of human potential – and specifically that of the artist himself. The disproportionately long arms, with all tension concentrated in the enlarged palms, become tools through which the sculptor engages with his material – and ultimately, instruments of his confrontation with life itself.

Greek sculptor Yanni Souvatzoglou draws his inspiration from the symbolic expressiveness of ancient sculpture, particularly Cycladic, Minoan, and Etruscan art. His body of work is predominantly anthropocentric and rich in symbolism. Numerous exhibitions across all continents underline Yannis‘ international presence and his great artistic talent.
