Yanni Souvatzoglou’s striking sculpture “Waiting for the Tide to Rise” serves as a powerful metaphor for the virtues of patience and the transformative power of the right moment. A male figure waits calmly yet attentively aboard a simplified boat. The long gondolier’s pole held in the figure’s hands extends the sculpture above the viewer’s eye level, creating a remarkable sense of elevation and weightlessness. The symmetrical composition possesses both a profound balance and an underlying tension.
Yanni himself describes the work as follows: “Patience is not a passive aspect of our nature, but rather the active ability to recognize the right moment – the opportunity that can carry us forward and lift us to new heights. To succeed, one must not focus solely on oneself, but must also remain aware of one’s surroundings, observing and understanding the world around us and learning how to make the most of its possibilities.”
The Greek sculptor Yanni Souvatzoglou draws inspiration from the symbolic expressive power of ancient sculpture, particularly Cycladic, Minoan, and Etruscan art. Humanity occupies the central role within his oeuvre, which is rich in symbolism and layered meaning.
