Oskar Höfinger is regarded as one of the most important graduates of Fritz Wotruba‘s master class and as a renowned representative of contemporary Austrian sculpture. Born in 1935 in Golling on the Erlauf (Lower Austria), and passing away in Vienna in 2022, he developed a distinct artistic style over the course of his long and independent career. His body of work reveals a wealth of autonomous motifs and forms, which he continuously varied, evolved, and recombined. What remains is a cohesive and self-contained life‘s work – celebrated through numerous commissions in public, private, and sacred spaces – marked by creative power and fueled by a deep joy in the human experience.
Oskar Höfinger’s “Sieger”, designed in 1969 is considered one of the key works in his oeuvre. The human figure is planned from its center, from which it extends outward in all directions, engaging dynamically with the surrounding space. It has no obligatory front or positioning. Depending on how it is installed, it resembles a person cheering, a soccer player, a high jumper, a javelin thrower and so on. It was therefore fitting that this design was realized in a large-scale, 9.84 feet high version for the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck.
The sculpture shown here, is 28 ⅓ inch in height. The well-balanced, expansive figure allows the artistic energy to radiate outwards, conveying a powerful sense of dynamic confidence and inner harmony.
