“Runners” offers a thoroughly contemporary reinterpretation of the classical theme of runners, as depicted on amphorae that were awarded as prizes in ancient footraces. Yanni Souvatzoglou — himself a runner in his youth — draws inspiration from his own lived experience. Through the simplicity of his formal approach, the linearity, and the abstract rendering of the human figure, he succeeds in clearly expressing the essence of movement and the fundamental idea of togetherness.
The three runner figures are captured in a moment of suspended motion, embodying a conceptual repetition of movement that carries a ritualistic character of catharsis. The sculptor gives form to the eternal — to the enduring nature of motion — while also capturing the moment of constant renewal. Each figure retains its individuality within the sculptural whole, emphasized by varying patina techniques that create subtle differences in coloration. The distinct existence of each person merges into a shared path, a unified rhythm, and synchronized stride. There is a captivating sculptural tension between dynamic propulsion and restrained energy.
Greek sculptor Yanni Souvatzoglou draws his inspiration from the symbolic expressiveness of ancient sculpture, particularly Cycladic, Minoan, and Etruscan art. His body of work is predominantly anthropocentric and rich in symbolism.
