Born in Gmunden, Upper Austria, in 1952, the Austrian painter Hubert Scheibl studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Arnulf Rainer and Max Weiler. During the early 1980s he developed – as one of the protagonists of the neo-expressionist group “Neue Wilde” – an abstract painting style, which was characterized by the material quality of impasto. This gave way around 1990 to a membranous, translucent thin layered structure, leading away from the surface area towards three-dimensionality. While working on „Stratos“  Scheibl applied layer by layer in countless steps and allowed coincidence to enter his work in a controlled setting, applying paint with a spatula or by scraping and exposing deeper layers of color.
