Markus Prachensky’s series “La Battaglia di San Romano”, created in 2010, is a tribute to the triptych of the same name by early Renaissance painter Paolo Uccello. The latter had captured the battle of San Romano (1432) on three panel paintings in the 1440s. Today, the individual panels of the triptych are distributed amongst the Paris Louvre, the Uffizi in Florence, and the National Gallery in London. With swift, powerful brushstrokes, Markus
Prachensky reduced Uccello’s intricately detailed composition to the absolutely essential, translating it into his inimitable imagery with gestural sensory notes. “London red” shows the Florentine horsemen under Niccolò da Tolentino rushing forwards, armed with long spears. In the ochre-based painting “Firenze”, the commander of Siena, Bernardino della Carda, is being thrown out of his saddle. In “Paris”, the Florentine military leader Micheletto Attendolo gathers his troops on green ground for the victorious conclusion of the battle. It brings us particular joy to be able to present to you the complete three-part series; such unity as this is certainly a rarity.
