Artur Nikodem was the leading figure of Tyrolean painting after the death of Albin Egger-Lienz. As a young man he undertook an educational journey to Munich (Academy of Fine Arts under Defregger and Kaulbach), Milan, Florence and finally Paris. From 1891 until 1908 he was the leader of the telegraph station in Merano where he became a member of the “Meraner Künstlerbund” (an association of Meran artists). On his walking tours he discovered his love for the Tyrolean mountains and the rural population. He moved to Innsbruck in 1908 where he lived until his death in 1940. After World War II he began to work as a freelance artist and had his breakthrough in the 1920ies and early 30ies. After a series of successful exhibitions he took part in the legendary travelling exhibition of Tyrolean artists (1925/26) side by side with Albin Egger-Lienz, Alfons Walde and Oskar Mulley. The illustrated painting is characterized by a quick expressive painting style with short parallelly arranged brush strokes, clearly defined colored areas and a high level of disintegration of the figurative.
