Etruria, the historic heartland of the enigmatic Etruscans, extends across parts of Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio. The Austrian painter Markus Prachensky first traveled to this region of central Italy in 1980 and was immediately captivated by the ancient culture and the landscape in which it emerged. Further journeys followed, taking him to various archaeological sites as well as to the Etruscan Museum at the Villa Giulia in Rome.

Prachensky translated his impressions of the sun-drenched, diverse landscape – along with its ancient architecture and artifacts – into several intensely colored series („Etruria“ 1980, „Etruria Blues“ 1982, „Etruria Orizontale“ 1984). The paintings in the „Etruria Meridionale“ series were created in 1981. Southern Etruria (Etruria meridionale) is a historical region in central Italy that includes the northern part of present-day Lazio and the southern part of Tuscany. It was a major center of the Etruscan civilization, with important cities such as Cerveteri, Tarquinia, and Veii. The region is known for its rich archaeological finds, particularly its rock-cut tombs.

Through energetic and emotionally charged gestural notes in bold colors, Markus Prachensky captures in a unique way both the cultural and the natural richness of Etruria, as well as the exuberant joy of Italian life.
