The colorful, dynamic series Campania Shuffle is Markus Prachensky’s homage to the ancient city of Paestum (Campania region), which he first visited in 1991. After Poseidon Stomp (1992), Campania Shuffle is the second series that the renowned Austrian painter has dedicated to the magnificent colonnaded temples of this important archaeological site.

Paestum was founded under the name of Poseidonia around 600 B.C. as a Greek colony in the Gulf of Salerno. It quickly became prosperous, which led to the construction of large temple complexes. In 274/73 BC the city was conquered by the Romans and renamed Paestum.

„Shuffle“ – the second part of the title – is a reference to the music of jazz composer Jelly Roll Morton (1885-1941), presumably specifically to his song „Mushmouth Shuffle“. The stirring jazz music that accompanied Prachensky during the creative process inspired the artist to create particularly life-affirming paintings in his unique gestural-intuitive style.

After studying painting and architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he founded the artists‘ group „St. Stephan“ with Josef Mikl, Arnulf Rainer and Wolfgang Hollegha. In 1957 Prachensky became a member of the Vienna Secession, from 1983 to 2000 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and led the master class for painting. Until the very end of his life Markus Prachensky worked on his oeuvre, which is known far beyond Austria’s borders.
