In 1967, at the age of 35, Markus Prachensky moved to Los Angeles and set up a studio in Westwood Village. The young painter would live and work in the „Golden State“ for three years, until 1970. This formative period in a city overflowing with creativity – along with the unique surrounding desert landscapes and salt lakes – had a lasting impact on Prachensky’s work.
More than 30 years later, in 1999 and 2000, Prachensky decided to travel to California again. The series „California Revisited“ (2001) was inspired by the impressions of this rediscovery. Set against a black background, the colors applied in broad, powerful brushstrokes radiate with a distinctive luminosity, evoking the striking contrast between dark desert landscapes and the glittering skylines of California’s nights.
