Vienna, last quarter of the 18th century
- carved, mounted and gilt lime wood
- anchor escapement, Viennese grande sonnerie on bells, reversing lever for petite sonnerie, repeater, turn-off for strike
- 26½ in
This Viennese cartel clock impresses with two carved angels, which seem to grow out of the foliage of the case. Their bodies follow the curve of the dial; their smiling faces are turned to each other. In one hand they hold a foliage festoon, in the other a blossom. In an elegant kind of way the carver brought the classic cartel clock shape to figural life. The movement with anchor escapement has a Viennese grande sonnerie and also a reversing lever for petite sonnerie.
